Uses of Lime

A commercially important property of lime is its ability to form solutions with silicates. When lime is heated with silica sand (SiO2) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), A solution is formed that does not crystallize when it is cooled. Instead, it hardens to an amorphous, clear, and nearly colorless solid; namely, glass.

Because it is a mixture and not a pure compound, glass does not have a distinct melting point; it gradually softens as it is heated. Therefore, it can be molded more efficiently.

INCA Mining

Mining and processing of limestone, dolomite and clay (attapulgite) in the Immerpan area, which is located 40km Southeast of Mokopane (approximately 230km North of Johannesburg) in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.

INCA Mining supplies limestone into the following markets:

  • Glass manufacturing as a low Fe content lime
  • Ferrochrome and other smelters
  • Agricultural market as agricultural lime
  • Fertilizer industry as a filler material
  • Animal feed as calcium source

Inca currently holds approved Mineral Leases and/or Mining Licenses with attendant E.I.As. and E.M.Ps over all its mineralised ground in the Immerpan area that totals in excess of 2,000 hectare.

Inca is conscious that its mining and related activities could potentially expose its employees, contractors, visitors and the local inhabitants to health and safety hazards. To address this issue Inca works strictly within especially the Mine Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996)

Serving Agriculture since 1993

Inca Mining (Pty) LTD was incorporated in 1991 and commenced exploration of the carbonates and underlying clay around Immerpan in 1993.

In 1997 INCA commenced mining and processing limestone after the necessary permitting allowed the construction of a new crushing and screening plant. Sales of high quality limestone products average around 15,000t per month with adequate mining and processing facilities in place to accommodate market growth.

In 2008 PBD Holdings (Pty) Ltd purchased a 75% share in INCA Mining.  Since the purchase capital investments were made to improve the quality of products as well as the production efficiency.  Included in the investments is a new dryer plant as well as improved crushing and screening technology.
